We’ve just had a busy weekend, dealing with spammers hiding behind our name and our first ‘alleged’ troll. As a result, we have made some changes to the website’s settings, improving its user-friendliness at the same time.
I have decided to remove the ability of our ‘alleged’ troll to post and comment, and for the time being at least, posts will not appear until they have been seen by an administrator. This action was taken reluctantly as the one thing we are conscious of is the potential of being accused of censoring comments that go counter to our views. I, personally, have no problem with people saying I’m wrong, as long as they can explain why. I find abusive drivel annoying at best. The purpose of the posts we publish is to generate debate that elucidates further the point under discussion, whether here or among friends in the real world; some of the comments posted over the weekend did not do that. I hope, in time, that we can dispense with moderation but it could return again if a troll appears or re-appears among us.
You are now able to elect (If I’ve understood our technical guru correctly) to follow a post that interests you – or not – as the case may be. This means we can dispense with the frequent email alerts, except when a primary posting is published (Please expect a correction if I’ve got this wrong.) which, from the feedback we’ve received, some of you found annoying, to say the least. Well, if I found them so, I can only imagine you did too.
With regards to the spammers, we have now weeded out the users that we believe gave access to our systems and hopefully that will be the end of that. The administrators do their best to accept only genuine users but mistakes and accidents will happen. Even after the actions described above, we still have over 200 supporters and growing. It would be helpful to us, therefore, if you could complete your profile, including a picture if possible.
I hope you will accept these actions as an attempt to improve the environment for everyone and that, with luck, we can return to normal service very soon.
